Ebony Case...
    Designed 1998
40"W-18"D-74"H

Macasser ebony veneer, solid ebony (door pulls) Mahogany (interior: dark stain), silk glass, and Halogen lighting.

This object is about volume and the perception of interior space. The ebony provides a strong and defined feeling to the exterior form. The silk glass cuts into this form both front and back allowing light to pass directly through the form. Silk glass is a water white glass with a very fine acid etching which gives the glass unique diffusion quality. Objects when placed up close to the glass can be seen clearly, however as the object moves away from the glass it softens dramatically making the object seem future back in space than it really is. This allows for the interior of the case to seem greater in depth than it really is and yet the form is pierced with translucency making its mass seem lighter.

The case also has the option to be illuminated internally, which allows for the objects displayed within to be seen more dramatically, this is even more dramatic because the dark ebony frames this panel of light on three sides. Also note that although the doors are only on one side this object can be set out into a room, the back is finished the same as the front and the objects displayed within can be viewed in the same way.
