44"W-22"D-74"H; Sitka spruce, synthetic rice paper, clear glass,
steel hardware, and halogen lighting
My interest here was to make a rather large form appear light,
and delicate. The actual storage capacity is generous. The Sitka
spruce ribs are only ½" thick and hold the synthetic
rice paper in its desired shape. Because of the soft translucent
nature of the paper and the interior lighting this object can act
like a large lantern, glowing in a dimmed room. It also has a wood
framed glass panel on top with glass shelves treated similarly
through out the interior. This allows ambient light to enter the
object and create plays of light upon the translucent screen. Through
these different options of illumination the way we are able to
perceive this object has many variables. One of the possibilities that I enjoy most about this object is
that if colored glass objects are kept within then when the piece
is lit, the light will pass through these objects and project a
pastel quality of color upon the screen giving us a hint of what
is stored within, creating abstract patterns that we can see on
the objects surface.
