Designed 1995 Smart Design was relocating to Varick Street in Manhattan. They
wanted assistance in designing the new area for their employees.
The goal was to create new work environment away from the traditional
cubical system to a more open and interactive scheme. the other main
concern was to employ only recycled materials. It was very important
that the space reflect the attitudes of design that Smart was marketing
to it's clients, and that he construction comes in at a modest cost. At the rear wall a long desk was placed so that each employee received
a small personal area for his or her phone and a place to keep notes,
etc. Coming into the space large storage cabinets were placed for
all the various parts and models used in industrial design. Along
with these were worktables that were on casters and could be ganged
with tables large enough to hold drawings. The overall was a functional, low cost, high-energy environment.
